WASHINGTON – House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) headlined a day-long conservative assault on the Obama administration’s policy toward Russia Tuesday, warning of Russian nostalgia for the Soviet empire and prodding President Barack Obama to push Russia to clean up its human-rights record.
The conservative critique of the Obama administration’s desire to “reset” its relationship with Russia is double-pronged. Republicans say the US has seen few fruits of two years of engagement with Moscow, and things are only going to get worse with the likely return to office next year of former Russian President Vladmir Putin.
“In Russia’s use of old tools and old thinking, we see nothing short of an attempt to restore Soviet-style power and influence,” Boehner said at the “Risks of Reset” event at the conservative Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. “Soon, Russia will be led by someone known to harbor intense Soviet nostalgia.”
Despite the outreach, Russia has not fully cooperated with the US on key global challenges, most notably international sanctions against Iran and Syria.
