Bomb attack kills 2 in NE Afghanistan

Local police officials told Press TV that the attack took place next to a girls’ school in the Kisham district of the mountainous province, situated 315 kilometers (195 miles) northeast of the Afghan capital Kabul, on Thursday.

They added the blast appeared to have been targeting a senior police officer, who was killed in the act of terror.

The attack comes a day after militants armed with assault rifles stormed the outpost of government-sponsored Afghan Local Police militiamen in the Khaki Safed district of Farah Province, and killed 10 members of the security force.

District administrator Abdul Khaliq Noorzai said the gunmen shot a guard, who was posted outside, then pushed into the compound and opened fire on those inside.

Provincial police chief Shamsul Rahman Zahid said another two militiamen were dragged outside and shot dead. Four militia members survived the attack.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the assault.

Meanwhile, at least 14 people, including four US troops, were killed and more than 25 others injured in a bomb attack in Afghanistan’s northern province of Faryab on Wednesday.

Local officials said a bomber detonated his explosives in the provincial capital of Maimanah as the American troops were filming interviews at a local park.

They said the attacker blew up an explosive-laden motorcycle close to a convoy of US-led forces in the area.

Insecurity continues to rise across Afghanistan despite the presence of some 130,000 US-led forces in the Asian country.

The United Nations announced on February 4 that 2011 was the deadliest on record for Afghan civilians. The death toll rose eight percent compared to the year before and was roughly double the figure for 2007.

Overall, 3,021 civilians died in violence related to the war and 4,507 were wounded in 2011. Of the deaths, the UN attributed 77 percent to militant attacks and 14 percent to US-led foreign troops and Afghan forces. Nine percent of the cases were classified as unknown.
