Budget must help boost spending: retailers

A retailers’ lobby group is calling for the federal budget to help boost spending and reduce the impact of the carbon tax on families.

Australian National Retailers Association (ANRA) chief executive Margy Osmond said encouraging retail figures had been released on Monday and the government needed to keep the momentum going.

“We would certainly hope for compensation for the carbon price and a range of other options that might put some extra money in people’s pocket,” she told reporters in Sydney on Monday.

“Retailers have been saying for some time that the average Australian family is feeling the pinch.

“Anything in tomorrow’s budget speech that suggests middle-to-low income earners will have less cash in their pockets could put a damper on the spending jump.”

Australian retail spending rose 0.9 per cent in March despite economists forecasting a rise of 0.2 per cent.

Ms Osmond said political certainty was needed to get people spending.

“The budget is not the only thing, political certainty (is needed),” she said.
