Senator Bob Carr has asked China for permission to send Australia’s ambassador to Beijing to the sensitive province of Tibet to investigate religious protests by self-immolation.

Senator Carr revealed the plan yesterday in response to questions by the Greens about his past description of the Dalai Lama as a ‘‘cunning monk’’.

Senator Carr said Australia was also asking to allow a group of parliamentarians ‘‘to investigate the grievances that have given rise to these extreme and distressing forms of protest’’.

But China is yet to respond to an earlier request for Australia to access Tibetan areas of neighbouring provinces in China.

Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young said 30 people had set themselves on fire in the past three years and 17 this year in protest against Chinese rule.

‘‘We hold concerns for human rights in Tibet and in other parts of China. Promoting improvements in human rights in China is an Australian goal,’’ Senator Carr said yesterday. ‘‘I have … been … appalled by the self-immolations.’’
