Cheaper to have kids on welfare: Abbott

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has told a business forum in Melbourne that women on welfare can afford to have more children than others.

Abbott used the occasion to promote his controversial paid parental leave scheme which provides mothers with six months leave at their full wage, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The Liberal leader said his alternative to Labor’s 18-week parental leave, a scheme paid at the minimum wage, was “fair dinkum” and in touch with “contemporary social reality”.

“Few accept that career and family should be an either or choice,” he said.

“Most households can’t afford to lose a substantial part of their regular income.

Abbott said if having a child meant reduced earning capacity then fewer people would have children and fewer women would have careers.

“At present, the only families that can have more children without damaging their financial position are those on welfare. It’s one of the reasons why the birth rate tends to be higher among people of lower socio-economic status.”

The opposition leader said he understood that families needed financial assistance when a child was born “but every family’s budget comes under strain as it grows which is why all families deserve support.”

Earlier this week the PM met with childcare industry representatives and parents to discuss proposals to make childcare more affordable.
