Coalition push for new airport

Opposition treasury spokesman Joe Hockey described Mr O’Farrell’s support for Canberra as ‘‘absurd’’ and said he hoped the Premier would change his mind.

Backbencher Paul Fletcher said the report was ‘‘a substantial piece of work which should not be dismissed lightly’’ and which ‘‘we need to engage with rather than putting off forever.’’

Liberal backbencher Alby Schulz, whose electorate includes the Wilton site, was ‘‘totally opposed to it, based on feedback from my constituency’’.

Former Tourism and Transport Forum director Christopher Brown, who was on the committee that wrote the report, said sitting around waiting for a fast rail was complete folly.

‘‘Our report is absolutely clear. If we do nothing a transport gridlock will choke the airport to death and the airport will choke Sydney’s economy … if our federal and state politicians cannot agree on this it is literally risking the future of NSW.’’
