Couple and girl killed in boat tragedy

A 12-YEAR-OLD girl and a couple in their 70s believed to be her grandparents have been killed and a man is missing after a catamaran capsized yesterday.

An 11-year-old girl survived. Police last night were informing relatives in Melbourne of the tragedy.

Emergency services were called about 1.50pm and surf lifesavers used boats and jet-skis to try to find the 47-year-old man, reportedly from the same family.

An ambulance helicopter and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter were called in and the search will resume this morning.

The accident occurred off Maloneys Beach on the northern shore of Batemans Bay on the south coast.

A member of the Batemans Bay Marine Rescue said one of its own radio club members first spotted the small boat upside down in the water near Yellow Rock, on returning from a day out fishing.

Dave Greenfields, the public relations manager for Batemans Bay Marine Rescue, said the service had gone to their aid and rescued the 11-year-old girl, who was found clinging to the hull of the twin-engined catamaran.

She was taken to Batemans Bay Hospital with minor injuries.

”They are heroes,” Mr Greenfields said.

An off-duty lifesaver’s attempts to resuscitate the couple were unsuccessful.

The blue and white catamaran was registered locally. Rescuers said they had found five lifejackets in the boat after the accident.

Mr Greensfield said the seas had been good at the time the twin-hull 4.9-metre craft was found.

Another local sailor, who had also been on the waters off Batemans Bay about the time of the accident, said the weather had been reasonable and the winds were no more than 20 knots.

It was initially believed that the missing man, who was reportedly not wearing a life jacket, had been trapped under the catamaran. However, that was ruled out when the catamaran was towed back to the boat ramp at Hanging Rock. Grave fears are held for the missing man.

”The water is very, very cold so survival becomes very limited,” a spokesman for Westpac Rescue Helicopter said.

The weather at Maloneys Beach, a village of 500 residents just north of the town of Batemans Bay, was calm yesterday, said Ken Wright, who was working at Maloneys Beach Store.

A woman who lives across from Maloneys Beach said in the morning a yacht race had finished without mishap and there had been a whale in the bay.
