Digger wounded in Afghani drug raid – Army

AN Australian special forces soldier has been shot and wounded in an operation against an insurgent drug laboratory.

Defence said that mission occurred in northwestern Kandahar Province late March and involved members of the Afghan National Security Force (ANSF) and Australian Special Operations Task Group (SOTG) with insurgents fighting back to protect their drugs operation.

The Australian soldier was wounded by insurgent small-arms fire.

He received immediate medical treatment and was evacuated by helicopter to an International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) base where he is in a satisfactory condition.

Commander of the SOTG, who can only be identified as Lieutenant Colonel J said the soldier was now resting comfortably in hospital.

“He’s in a stable condition and was able to speak to his family in Australia by telephone,” he said.

During the operation, the Australian and Afghani forces seized 50kg of hashish, 280kg of poppy seed, 105kg of morphine base and 25 litres of morphine solution.

The drugs were later destroyed by the Afghan National Interdiction Unit and US Drug Enforcement Administration.

“This is a significant blow to the insurgency as it will limit their ability to launch attacks on coalition forces in Kandahar, Helmand and Oruzgan provinces,” Lieutenant Colonel J said.

In another operation this month, Australian and Afghani troops captured an insurgent commander for the Mirabad district of Oruzgan province.

He’s believed to be responsible for several improvised explosive device (IED) attacks and for authorising attacks on ANSF and international partners.

In February, another partnered operation captured an insurgent commander in the Deh Rafshan district of Oruzgan.

Defence said he was believed to be a direct subordinate of a senior insurgent leader and responsible for directing local level insurgent operations and IED attacks on international partners as well as dealing in weapons.
