Dozens in Vic told to flee flooding

About two dozen eastern Victorian residents have spent the night in a refuge centre, with people from about 90 homes told to evacuate after up to 150mm of rain lashed the area in one day.

About 23 Traralgon residents spent Monday night in a State Emergency Service (SES) refuge centre after evacuating their homes.

SES officers urged residents from about 90 homes in Traralgon to evacuate at about 2am (AEST) on Tuesday.

Flooding closed the South Gippsland Highway and the Monaro Highway in the region overnight and SES spokesman Toby Borella said 12 people had to be rescued from their cars in Gippsland after they became trapped while trying to drive through floodwaters.

“We’re reminding people not to drive or otherwise go near floodwater because it’s extremely dangerous,” Mr Borella said.

He said the SES had received 750 calls for help at wind- and rain-battered properties across the state since Sunday.

About 300 of the calls related to trees that had been brought down.

Wind gusts of up to 130km/h also whipped the state’s alps, while the Otways on the state’s southeastern coast has copped about 240mm of rain since 9am on Sunday.

Seven major flood warnings remain in place across Gippsland and the state’s southwest, the Bureau of Meteorology says.

It says while flooding appears to have peaked, Gippsland residents should be wary, with another 50-60mm of rain expected to fall there on Tuesday.

In the state’s southwest, the Barwon River peaked at a major flood level of 6.7 metres at Ricketts Marsh, between Geelong and Colac at 10pm on Monday, but only 16 calls for assistance were received in the area, the SES said.

The low pressure system that caused the state’s wild weather is expected to move into NSW, where it’s likely to affect coastal areas, the bureau says.
