Reef report no cause for shame: authority

Australia should not be embarrassed by an international report that criticises the management of the Great Barrier Reef, a reef authority says.

But the report must be a catalyst for long-term, strategic planning to protect the reef for future generations, the chairman of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority says.

Russell Reichelt says Australia has not been complacent in its management of the World Heritage-listed asset.

“I don’t think we should be embarrassed by the report. I think we should accept that it’s pointing to some real risks we can work on in a strategic way,” Dr Reichelt told the ABC.

“I think both governments have said that they’ll do that.”

He said state and federal governments had worked well on reef protection in the past, and that must continue.

The UNESCO report, released on Saturday, has threatened to list the reef as a World Heritage site “in danger” unless Australia improves conservation and makes substantial changes to its supervision of the area by February.
