Drivers refusing to use new Qld busway

Bus drivers are planning a boycott of Brisbane’s new Northern Busway, saying they haven’t been given adequate safety training.

The network of tunnels linking the CBD to Brisbane’s inner northern suburbs is due to open on Monday.

The Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) says all drivers want is to see where things like emergency exits are, in case of fire or an accident.

The union’s David Matters says the Brisbane City Council (BCC) has refused to let the drivers do that in working hours and has told them to make the trip in their own time.

“They’ve been shown a video of a virtual representation of the tunnels but that’s not good enough,” Mr Matters told AAP.

“It’s not the same as actually driving through the tunnels.

“The health and safety representatives are going through today to identify the hazards and the emergency services people did a full training exercise in the tunnel last night.”

Mr Matters said the union is doing everything it can to avoid disruptions on Monday.

“We’re happy to get this resolved over the weekend if necessary to avoid disruptions. We’re not trying to be unreasonable – I’m sure we can work out a way to do it.”
