On Wednesday, Reuters reported that the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus killed 22 chickens out of 32 kept in a family backyard at Biras in the Perigord region in France.
This outbreak is considered the first since France’s 2007 outbreak detected in wild swans; the British news agency quoted the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE.)
The head of the veterinarian quarantine at the airport Safwat Mubarak told Youm7 that the ban on French poultry’s import was a ministerial decision.
Mubarak added that any birds coming from France will be executed immediately as implementation to the decision and to “prevent the virus from reaching inside the country.”
The disease first appeared in Egypt in 2006. The number of people who died after contracting the virus reached 10 in 2014.
Most avian flu cases in Egypt have been detected in impoverished rural areas, where villagers traditionally raise poultry on the rooftops of their homes to supplement their diet.
The Ministry of Health has repeatedly urged citizens who deal with poultry and livestock to be cautious and take preventive measures to avoid infection. It also called on those who suffer from symptoms of the flu to head to nearest hospital within 24 hours to increase the chances of their recovery.
