The first phase of the development of the David’s Sling Weapon System concluded Sunday with a successful interception test. The test included for the first time a successful interception by the Stunner Missile, meant to provide lower-tier intercept capability for Israel’s multi-layered missile defense system.

The joint project is being conducted by the Israel Missile Defense Organization and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency and was agreed to in 2010.

The system uses a low-cost, short-range interceptor to destroy short-range ballistic missiles and long range rockets with ranges of 70 – 200 km.

A statement released by Israel’s Ministry of Defense stated in part: “The DSWS is designed to provide an additional layer of defense against ballistic missiles by adding additional opportunities for interception to the joint U.S.-Israel Arrow Weapon System, resulting in an improvement in the State of Israel’s defense architecture against missile threats.”
