Germany superior power in Europe: Poll

A total of 6100 European adults in 12 countries responded to the poll, which was conducted by Eurobarometer survey institute via phone from May 22 to 25, 2012.

The institute released the results of the poll on June 6.

The respondents were asked whether there was an equivalent balance of power among the European Union member states.

The results showed that 77 percent of the respondents believe there was no balance of power among EU member countries, while 5 percent of them said the opposite.

Eighteen percent answered, “I don’t know.”

Those respondent who believe in no balance of power within EU, were asked which country was the superior power in the EU.

The results indicated that 69 percent of respondents believed Germany was the superior power. France and Britain with 28 percent and 2 percent respectively came second and third.

The respondents were asked if the EU would gain strength and remain in the current situation or would integrate.

Some 42 percent of the respondents believed that the EU would remain in the current state, while 35 percent said it would collapse. Fourteen percent said the EU would empower. Nine percent answered, “I don’t know.”

Europe plunged into financial crisis in early 2008. Insolvency now threatens heavily debt-ridden countries such as Greece, Portugal, Italy, Ireland and Spain.

The worsening debt crisis has forced EU governments to adopt harsh austerity measures and tough economic reforms, triggering incidents of social unrest and massive protests in many European countries including Portugal, Spain, Greece and Italy.

There are fears that more delays in resolving the eurozone debt crisis could push not only Europe but much of the rest of the developed world back into recession.
