Gina Rinehart’s poem slammed by expert

The poem (see below) penned by the mining magnate is titled ‘Our Future’ and takes a swipe at the Federal Government for not supporting the resource industry and “unleashing rampant tax”.

However, creative writing lecturer at the University of Western Australia, Professor Dennis Haskell, says Ms Rinehart could benefit from attending some of his classes.

“I guess it’s not written with artistic merit in mind,” Professor Haskell told ABC’s Geoff Hutchison.

“It’s a polemical poem and we do have a tradition of those in Western Australia and I think good on her for having a go.”

“On the other hand, if one of our creative writing students at UWA had presented it, he or she wouldn’t have done very well,” laughed Professor Haskell.

Professor Haskell critically assessed Ms Rinehart’s attempt at poetry and suggested many improvements to the prose, including the proper use of punctuation and grammar.

“Especially if you’re going to set it in stone, you want to have those things correct,” He said.

“She seems to stop believing in full stops a certain way through the poem.”

The poem is engraved on a plaque which is attached to a 30-tonne iron ore boulder located outside the new Coventry Square Markets in Morley.

Professor Haskell says phrases in the poem like ‘You strive to build the world’ is too vague and has no meaning.

“Poetry needs to be specific so what do you actually mean by that? And there’s not enough thinking throughout the poem of what’s actually meant,” he said.

“As a poet she’s about as good as I am at mining,” he said.

Professor Haskell says Gina Rinehart would be wise to keep her day job.

“She won’t make as much money out of poetry, that’s for sure.”

Our Future

The globe is sadly groaning with debt, poverty and strife
And billions now are pleading to enjoy are better life
Their hope lies with resources buried deep within the earth
And the enterprise and capital which give each project worth
Is our future threatened with massive debts run up by political hacks
Who dig themselves out by unleashing rampant tax
The end result is sending Australian investment, growth and jobs offshore
This type of direction is harmful to our core
Some envious unthinking people have been conned
To think prosperity is created by waving a magic wand
Through such unfortunate ignorance, too much abuse is hurled
Against miners, workers and related industries who strive to build the world
Develop North Australia, embrace multiculturalism and welcome short term foreign workers to our shores
To benefit from the export of our minerals and ores
The world’s poor need our resources: do not leave them to their fate
Our nation needs special economic zones and wiser government, before it is too late.
