Gunmen kill 7 Pakistani forces in Punjab

In a pre-dawn assault on an army camp in Gujrat district on Monday, armed gunmen killed at least seven security forces, including six soldiers and one policeman, and injured several others.

The unknown assailants ambushed the military camp and opened fire on soldiers who were coming back to their camp after the morning prayers.

Pakistani security forces set up the camp almost a month ago in order to recover the body of an army officer who went missing in a helicopter crash about 45 days ago.

The assailants fled the scene of the incident after the attack. No group has claimed responsibility for the offensive yet.

The attack came after a similar offensive in southwestern Balochistan province, where unidentified gunmen killed 18 workers and injured several more.

Thousands of Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001 when Pakistan joined an alliance with the United States in the so-called war against terrorism.

Since late 2009, there has been a surge in militant attacks in Pakistan and thousands more have been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.
