Guns, cash stolen as residents sleep

Something went bump in the night at a home in southern NSW on Tuesday but not loudly enough to wake anyone up.

A man and woman slept soundly in their beds as their Tumut house was broken into and cash and guns stolen, police say.

The property was broken into sometime between 11pm (AEST) on Tuesday and 7.30am (AEST) on Wednesday.

One or more intruders apparently stole a bag containing cash before heading to the garage, where they removed a gun safe from a wall.

Four registered rifles and a small amount of ammunition were taken.

A police spokeswoman said the two residents at the house slept through the incident.

It was not yet clear whether the burglar or burglars knew what they were looking for, she said.
