Iran cleric urges action on Myanmar

“World Muslims shouldn’t ignore the massacre of the oppressed Muslims in Myanmar because of being preoccupied with [their own] internal conflicts,” Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem-Shirazi said in the holy city of Qom on Saturday.

Stating that enemies have sowed rifts among Muslims all across the world, as in Syria, he noted that the ensuing inattention of the Muslims “has led to the brutal massacre of thousands of innocent Muslims [in different countries] including Myanmar.”

Grand Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi urged Muslim countries to voice opposition to this genocide and added, “Muslims should urge the UN and other international bodies to protect these innocent Muslims.”

The government of Myanmar refuses to recognize Rohingyas, who it claims are not natives, and classifies them as illegal migrants. Rohingyas, however, are believed to be Muslim descendants of Persian, Turkish, Bengali, and Pathan origin that migrated to Myanmar as early as the 8th century.

The UN has described Rohingya Muslims as one of the most persecuted minorities in the world.

Last Friday, Myanmar’s President Thein Sein declared that Rohingya Muslims must be expelled from the country and sent to refugee camps run by the United Nations.

Reports say 650 Rohingya Muslims were killed as of June 28 alone during clashes in the western region of Rakhine. This is while 1,200 others are missing and 80,000 more have been displaced.
