Israel’s ‘narrow view’ of Iran threat ‘frustrating White House’

The Israeli concern is with Iran’s plans to move the majority of its uranium
enrichment facilities into underground bunkers near Qom, where they would be
protected from air strikes by several layers of granite. Whether or not this
justifies a pre-emptive strike is provoking debate with their US allies.

In a lengthy interview with Israeli journalist Ronen Bergman, Mr Barak
suggested that a pre-emptive Israeli strike on Iran was all but inevitable.

Leon Panetta, the US defence secretary, has admitted that tests carried out by
the US military found that even their largest conventional bombs are not
capable of penetrating Iran’s underground facilities.

But the Americans are of the opinion that “there are many other options”
to dissuade Iran from its nuclear development programme and point to the
recent collapse of the Iranian economy as evidence that sanctions are
working.
