The recent revelations from the trial of the former President of Honduras Juan Orlando Hernández regarding the role of Israeli officials in supporting, aiding and enabling the vicious drug cartels of central and south America in their operations has unsurprisingly barely been covered in the Anglophone media.
The synopsis of the charges against Hernández are that during his presidency (2014-2022) he accepted bribes from major drugs cartels – including the famous Latin American drug lord of them all Joaquin Guzman better known as ‘El Chapo’ and the head of the powerful Sinaloa cartel – to facilitate the smuggling of cocaine from Columbia and Venezuela through Honduras on to the United States. (1) This relationship had been going on since at least 2004. (2)
Hernández used the millions of dollars in bribes from the smuggling of cocaine through Honduras to manipulate the 2013 and 2017 presidential elections by bribing officials. (3)
The interesting thing about Hernández is that he was remarkably and unswervingly pro-Israel and moved Honduras’ embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in 2021. (4)
Indeed Hernández’ Honduras was considered the poster boy for successful Israeli diplomacy. (5)
Israel reciprocated Hernández’s support by arming the Honduras’ security and military forces from 2016 ostensibly to fight the narco-terrorism of the drug cartels that we now know Hernández was in the pocket of. (6)
Now you might say that Israel ‘didn’t know’ of Hernández’s links to the drug cartels of central and south America but this is where the recent testimony in Hernández trial comes in with a confidential informant and member of the Sinaloa cartel known as ‘Luis Perez’ officially testifying that the Israeli Embassy in Columbia actively helped the Sinaloa cartel move cocaine destined for the United States as well as launder the proceeds. (7)
As Perez states:
‘We worked with officials at the Israeli embassy. The woman who transported money for us from Honduras to Colombia was an official in the Israeli embassy.’ (8)
More interestingly Perez’ assertion predates Hernández’ presidency as the specific instance cited above occurred on multiple occasions between 2008 and 2010 (9) and the Israeli embassy in Columbia allegedly laundered between $100 and $150 million for the Sinaloa cartel alone. (10)
Nor is Perez alone in suspecting that the Israeli government and its security apparatus as well as the IDF have been involved in knowingly supporting the drugs cartels and nacro-terrorism as it suits their foreign policy objectives since Eitay Mack more or less reaches the same conclusion in his 2022 article in Haaretz on the subject. (11)
