Jurrah to face court over assault claims

Melbourne Demons AFL star Liam Jurrah is preparing to face court in Alice Springs on Monday for a hearing into claims he took part in an attack on four people in March.

Jurrah is accused of being involved in the Alice Springs attack, which police allege involved weapons including an axe and a traditional Aboriginal club, a nulla nulla.

He and his co-accused – Christopher Walker and Josiah Fry – face four counts of aggravated assault, one of unlawfully causing serious harm and one of being armed with an offensive weapon at night.

The trio could face jail if ultimately found guilty of the crimes although the hearing that begins on Monday before Magistrate David Bamber will not determine guilt or innocence.

The preliminary examination, expected to take three days, will determine whether there is enough evidence to justify the charges against the footballer proceeding to trial.

At an earlier hearing in May, Jurrah’s lawyer, John McBride, indicated identification may be an issue because the alleged attack took place at night.

The May hearing also was told alcohol might be a factor among some witnesses.

Melbourne coach Mark Neeld has said the hearing won’t be a distraction for the AFL club.

“We’re fully aware of what Liam’s going through at the moment,” Neeld told reporters in Darwin on Saturday night.

“We’ve got certain people within our footy club that are well educated in that area and are offering Liam all the support we can possibly give him.”
