Ken Lacey’s beer was spiked – lawyer

COLOURFUL Gold Coast businessman Ken Lacey has lost his licence for a month and been fined $1000 after pleading guilty to driving while under the influence of drugs.

Southport Magistrates Court was told today he was a victim of drink spiking.

Lacey, whose sons Jade and Dionne are serving long prison terms for crimes including murder and torture, was found slumped unconscious behind the wheel of a black Mercedes-Benz convertible on December 13, 2010 near Harbour Town shopping centre at Arundel.

Southport Magistrates Court was told today a mixture of drugs including amphetamines, cocaine and GHB were found in Lacey’s blood.

But solicitor Kevin Cartledge said his client and his mate were the victims of drink spiking.

He said Lacey and Stephen Gibson ordered VB beers at a Broadbeach restaurant but believed the drinks were spiked when they went to the toilet.

In a written statement Mr Gibson said his beer “tasted crap” and both drinks were left unfinished.

He said he became sick soon after returning home.

Magistrate Deborah Vasta imposed the minimum penalty of one month’s disqualification and a $1000 fine on Lacey.
