The Queensland Premier is today due to see Governor Penelope Wensley, to call an election for March 24, meaning parliament will be dissolved and Anna Bligh’s government will go into care-taker mode.
The opposition Liberal National Party needs only a swing of about 4.6 per cent to topple the government.
The latest newspoll in the Weekend Australian has the LNP at 58 per cent to Labor’s 42 on a two-party-preferred basis.
But to become premier, LNP leader Campbell Newman, who is not a member of parliament, must win the seat of Ashgrove with a swing of more than seven per cent.
Meanwhile, federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says Queensland’s election is also a referendum on the federal government’s carbon tax.
