Motorists rescued as storm hits Sydney

The NSW State Emergency Service says it has received 296 calls for assistance and undertaken 12 flood rescues after a severe storm hit Sydney.

Most of the rescues took place in Sydney’s east and south, with one in Canada Bay.

The SES said multiple people had been rescued and there had been reports of water up to two metres deep, causing cars to float on the roads.

It says the majority of calls for assistance were related to flash flooding and there were several reports of water entering people’s homes.

There are also reports of some trees and branches down in Sydney’s west.

Many traffic lights in the Sydney metropolitan area were blacked out or flashing yellow as a result of the storm, the Road Transport Authority said.

Several roads were also been closed due to flooding.

The SES advised anyone who needs assistance to call 132 500.
