Michael Pengilly posted a slur about Julia Gillard on Twitter
South Australian Liberal MP Michael Pengilly has apologised for calling the Prime Minister Julia Gillard a “real dog” in a comment posted on Twitter.
Mr Pengilly’s slur was in response to a tweet which commented on Julia Gillard reportedly celebrating the Federal Government’s move to replace speaker Harry Jenkins.
The MP has since deleted the tweet.
Mr Pengilly told State Parliament his comment was a “poor use of terminology.”
“Anyone who knows me knows I do not abuse women, hit them or anything else… If my comments have caused offence to the Prime Minister I apologise to her,” he said.
SA shadow attorney-general Stephen Wade says his colleague’s comment was inappropriate.
“I completely condemn the comments of Michael Pengilly. I am a white ribbon ambassador, I do not support violence against women whether it’s physical or verbal,” he said.
“As a member of the Liberal Party team [I] will be looking to my leadership to take action if Mr Pengilly can’t comprehensively explain his behaviour.”
Opposition Leader Isobel Redmond also says the slur was inappropriate and unacceptable and says she plans to talk to Mr Pengilly privately.
Mr Pengilly’s comment comes only days after fellow state Liberal Mitch Williams was criticised for a question he asked of Labor MP Chloe Fox.
