Liberal MP Teresa Gambaro apologised after comments she made earlier today regarding immigrants and hygiene sparked outrage across the country.

The Opposition spokeswoman on citizenship and settlement has been lambasted for her comments that new immigrants coming into Australia need to wear deodorant on public transport and wait in queues without pushing in.

She was quoted in one media report as saying: “Without trying to be offensive, we are talking about hygiene and what is an acceptable norm in this country when you are working closely with other co-workers.”

“You hear reports of people using public transport [without deodorant] and I think Australians are guilty of this too,” she added.

She told Radio National’s Breakfast program that she had been speaking about “a whole host of things, of which certainly health, hygiene matters come into it”, adding that tenancy issues and consumer rights are also important.

“By no means is that the only focus… that’s just one small part of [it].”

By the afternoon, Ms Gambaro issued a statement to the media, claiming the comments were misconstrued and apologising for any offence they may have caused.

“The comments [regarding cultural and hygienic matters] were taken out of context, are inappropriate and do not reflect Coalition policy,” the statement read.

“As someone who has come from a migrant family, I am proud of the contribution that generations of migrants have made to Australia and I would not want my reported comments, however inaccurate, to leave the impression that this contribution is not recognised.

“People should be properly supported when they come to Australia as migrants.

“I regret any offence that may have been taken and unreservedly apologise.”

Earlier, Ms Gambaro had sought to clarify her comments on ABC Radio National’s Breakfast program.

“I was speaking about a whole host of things, of which certainly health, hygiene matters come into it,” she said, adding that tenancy issues and consumer rights are also important.

“By no means is that the only focus… that’s just one small part of [it].”

Comments ridiculed

Only hours after the hygiene comments were published, Ms Gambaro’s Wikipedia entry was updated to include her profession as an “Armpit Sniffer” and her religion “Orderly Queuing”.

But the ridicule did not stop there. Many people, including politicians, took to Twitter to voice their disgust.

“Libs want migrants to take hygiene classes. Who will teach them? The Aussie bloke with 5 day growth pants slung down past his underwear?” Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young tweeted.

“Theresa [sic] Gambaro’s comments in the Aus[tralian] today are bizarre and silly. Perhaps they could have been expected in 1952 not in 2012,” tweeted Immigration Minister Chris Bowen.

“Such xenophobic commentary from an elected representative indicates Teresa Gambaro’s in need of cultural intelligence training IMO,” journalist and academic Julie Posetti tweeted.

Political commentator and former Liberal Greg Barns also took aim: “Teach migrants about deodorant, queues: MP. yet another racist ignorant Liberal Party MP.”
