Victorian Police have charged a man with possessing explosives, after allegedly discovering them in a car at Melbourne’s Docklands.

Streets were closed for hours and a cafe had to be evacuated as a result of the search in Harbour Esplanade this morning.

The 31-year-old man was arrested by officers investigating a series of burglaries.

He has faced an out-of-sessions court hearing on charges that include conduct endangering life.

Earlier, Detective Sergeant Jason Owen said the explosives had been taken for analysis.

“I can’t really go into the specifics of what was actually found other than to say it has all the appearances of commercially made explosives,” he said.

“It’s not a substantial amount but it’s certainly enough to cause concern.”
