Police say there has been a fatal crash near Port Pirie in South Australia between a car and a goods train.

The crash happened about 9:45am ACDT on Port Flinders Causeway, off National Highway One, about seven kilometres north of Port Pirie. 

Authorities said a man died at the scene and a woman in her 80s was treated by ambulance crews after she was freed from the wreckage.

She was flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

The crash closed the rail crossing and the iron ore train remains at the scene.

There have been 21 road deaths in SA for the year compared with 24 for the same part of last year.
