Mechanic, 24, killed in van explosion

A Darwin man thought to be a fridge mechanic has died after gas bottles exploded when he started his van.

The blast at 6.30am (CST) was heard at least 1.5km away by local firefighters, who arrived to find the man dead in his driveway and his van destroyed.

Police said the gas explosion, in the suburb of Parap, was likely caused by acetylene in a gas bottle that was somehow ignited when he turned the Toyota HiAce’s ignition.

Numerous gas bottles in the van ignited, causing the blast.

The NT News has reported on its website that the dead man was a 24-year-old refrigeration mechanic, although a police spokeswoman couldn’t immediately confirm that.

Three people inside the man’s home were uninjured in the explosion.

Police say several people are being treated for shock.

Traffic in the area was experiencing major disruptions.

The man’s death comes just days after a Melbourne plumber died when his van loaded with gas cylinders exploded.

The 25-year-old tradie was about to leave for work when the van exploded, blasting debris into nearby homes.
