AN innocent bystander had a lucky escape after his car was smashed into by a driver fleeing police.

Witnesses said the 31-year-old Glenroy man was uninjured but in shock after he was hit at the intersection of Pascoe Vale and Glenroy roads at 11am.

The accident happened when Fawkner police officers were chasing an unregistered black Nissan sedan travelling east, which had failed to stop.

The driver sped through an intersection and smashed into the front of a green Mazda.

Witness Sam Tana, 45 said both men in the car being chased were detained at the scene.

“The two men in handcuffs would still have been in shock and their faces were bleeding,” he said.

“We saw the police car and then we noticed the victim sitting on a chair, which had been brought out by a business owner. He was in shock.

The driver of the Nissan, a 26-year-old Meadow Heights man, was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with serious injuries.

His passenger, a man aged in his 20s was assisting police with their inquiries.

The innocent bystander was not injured.
