AUTHORITIES are searching for an elderly pilot from Victoria whose plane took off from an airfield in New South Wales on Monday morning and has not been seen since.
The 79-year-old Mildura man had left in a single-engine Cessna from Wentworth, about 30 kilometres north-west of Mildura, at 10am. When he did not return, his family alerted police yesterday afternoon.
A search and rescue aircraft from Melbourne was flown in to assist as was a helicopter from South Australia. Both aircraft are equipped with night-vision capability.
”It was around 4pm we had the call so we only had a small window of light to begin the search,” said a spokesman for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, which is co-ordinating the search with police from three states.
