The mining company which was planning to drill for coal seam gas in Sydney’s inner-west has ruled out going ahead with the project.

Dart Energy received the go-ahead to drill an exploration well in St Peters, but was met with fierce community opposition.

In a statement the company said drilling will not be undertaken in St Peters.

A company spokesman claims that has been its position for almost a year, but critics of the proposed well say it is news to them.

New South Wales Greens Mining Spokesman, Jeremy Buckingham, says the decision is a massive victory.

“Never before has this company ruled out coal seam gas in an urban environment, now they have, and it’s an indicator that it’s not safe and should be ruled out by Barry O’Farrell,” he said.

Other opponents to the well have welcomed the announcement with caution.

Vice President of anti-mining alliance Lock The Gate Jacinta Green is calling for Dart Energy to give up its claim on the land.

“As long as that approval sits in State Parliament, there are very large loopholes,” she said.

“There is nothing to stop them from setting up in Alexandria, five metres away from where they were planning to set up in St Peters.”
