A man mistakenly declared dead by paramedics after a horrific Melbourne car smash has walked free from a hospital.
Daniel Huf, who was pronounced dead at the scene of a Bacchus Marsh crash on April 1, despite still breathing, has been discharged and the Royal Melbourne Hospital says he is recovering well.
The hospital’s Intensive Care Unit deputy director Chris Macisaac says doctors were gravely concerned for Mr HUF when he was admitted, but he has since made remarkable progress.
A report into the paramedics’ actions found they had noticed the 30-year-old was still breathing when they examined him in the wreck of his car, yet still inexplicably declared him dead and left the scene.
