Mokbel deserved life: former detective

Former drug kingpin Tony Mokbel deserved life in prison, according to the man who headed the police task force that brought him to justice.

Victorian Supreme Court Justice Simon Whelan said he considered Mokbel’s recent heart attack and a genetic predisposition to heart disease when sentencing him to a minimum 22 years in prison.

The former head of Purana Task Force, Jim O’Brien, said it was a consideration Mokbel never had for others while running his drug empire.

“I’d like to have seen him get a life sentence,” he told reporters outside court on Tuesday.

“It’s all very well to say he has health issues. We’ve all got health issues. He’s the same as any other member of the community and I don’t think that should be something taken into account.

“He certainly didn’t consider the health of his intended victims when he was manufacturing this stuff and pushing it in our communities.”

The former detective inspector said he did not believe Mokbel was remorseful and doubted he would be a reformed man upon his release.

“Look at the background, look at the overall family background. It’s not just him, his brother’s likewise,” Mr O’Brien said.

“From the investigations we did we certainly found no evidence of any legitimate income whatsoever.”

Mr O’Brien said the pleasant, confident demeanour Mokbel displayed in court throughout his trial was a key to his success as a criminal figure.

“He is a personable sort of person who has that affability about him and that’s what attracts him to people and that’s what makes people attracted to him,” he said.
