Negative gearing debate needed: Robertson

NSW Opposition Leader John Robertson has called for a debate on whether negative gearing is harming housing affordability.

The western Sydney MP says the cost of living is biting in his community.

“People are struggling with housing affordability, whether it is renting or (buying their first home),” Mr Robertson told Sky News.

He said more needed to be done to ease pressure on housing prices.

“We ought to be having a debate about negative gearing,” Mr Robertson said.

He said families purchasing their second and third properties as investments were inadvertently putting pressure on their own children’s chances of getting into the property market.

“Everyone I talk to is concerned about how their kids are going to buy a house,” he said.

“There is no real appreciation about what negative gearing is doing in terms of putting pressure on housing prices for their kids to get their foot in the door.”

He hasn’t yet discussed the idea with the Gillard government.
