Protesters were chanting slogans against the government, demanding the resignation of the country’s Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai.
The clashes took place near Katmandu airport where protesters were trying to block Bhattarai’s motorcade.
At least one protester was badly injured after the police forces beat demonstrators with truncheons.
Bhattarai has been leading a caretaker government since last month.
The country’s opposition parties want Bhattarai to step down so that a new government of representatives from all major parties can take over and hold elections in November.
