NSW to host parks conference

Sydney will host an international conference on the creation and conservation of parks, the NSW Government has announced.

The NSW Government announced on Sunday that the city will host the 2014 International Union for Conservation of Nature’s World Parks Congress.

The event, held once a decade, is a forum that seeks to set the agenda for the creation and conservation of protected areas around the globe.

NSW Environment Minister Robyn Parker said it is expected to attract more than 3000 visitors and provide a $25 million economic boost.

‘As well as the economic boost from the Congress itself, hosting the event is a magnificent opportunity for us to provide a global audience for our stunning national parks that are accessible from Sydney and across NSW,’ she said in a statement.

The announcement comes after the state government unveiled in May a list of 79 national parks and reserves where recreational shooters would be allowed to cull feral animals.

The move was part of a deal reached with the Shooters Party to enable the privatisation of electricity generators.

Shooters Party MP Robert Brown introduced a bill enabling the changes to the upper house on Thursday as more than 100 protesters demonstrated outside Parliament House against the plan.

On Sunday, Ms Parker said the government was working on making the state’s parks more ‘accessible to visitors through a diverse range of recreational experiences including horse riding and mountain biking’.
