Poisonous chemicals dumped on roadside

Authorities are appealing for information to track down those responsible for dumping five drums of poisonous chemicals along a 300 metre stretch of road in Nowergup north of Perth last month.

Several drums were marked as poisonous, and three of which had leaked their contents. One of the drums was marked as containing liquid glass, or sodium silicate, a corrosive material that can burn the eyes and skin.

The Department of Environment and Conservation’s manager of environmental hazards Ken Raine said the drums were dropped along Wesco Road in mid-October, and was appealing for information about who may be responsible.

He said it appeared the drums had been pushed off a moving vehicle, most likely on the weekend of October 15 and 16.

Those found guilty of dumping the chemicals face a maximum fine of $62,500.

“Dumping drums of chemicals like this is irresponsible and illegal,” he said.

“The chemicals can cause injury to an unsuspecting person who may handle the drums and they can pollute ground water.”

Anyone with information can call the PollutionWatch hotline on 1300 784 782.
