Police: Man arrested in Miss. university shooting

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Authorities said a man has been charged with capital murder and the sale of a controlled substance in connection with the death of a Mississippi State University student shot last weekend in a dormitory.

Mason Perry Jones, 21, of Jackson, was charged in the death of 21-year-old John Sanderson, university police said.

For a capital murder charge, there must be an underlying felony charge, and university spokeswoman Maridith Geuder said the underlying charge is the sale of a controlled substance. She didn’t elaborate on the charges.

She said Jones, who wasn’t an MSU student, has requested an attorney.

The U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force arrested Jones on Sunday in Memphis, Tenn.

Sanderson was shot Saturday in a dormitory on campus.

Authorities say two “persons of interest” are wanted for questioning.
