Premier welcomes business from Perth

NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell says a manufacturer’s relocation from Perth to western Sydney is a testament to local facilities, workforce – and lawmakers.

Mr O’Farrell was in Bankstown on Friday to officially open a new Quickstep facility that will create 400 local jobs.

He said the automotive and aerospace parts supplier would benefit from new laws passed hours earlier to revamp the NSW WorkCover scheme.

“The reforms put through the parliament last night to avoid higher costs on employers, but (also) to provide an adequate level of protection to anyone who is injured in the workplace are just as important in ensuring Quickstep and other companies succeed in this state,” he told audiences in the World War II-era hangar.

Quickstep managing director Philippe Odouard told the crowd the company, which has a long-term contract to make parts for the international F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter Program, was breaking new ground.

“We are writing a new page in (the site’s) history with the production of parts for the most capable fighter ever,” he said.

Mr O’Farrell said manufacturing still played a crucial role in NSW, and his government had worked to attract the defence industry to the state.

“I am pleased (Quickstep) are demonstrating their capacity to compete at an international level and win contracts for what is perhaps the largest defence investment that this country has ever seen,” he said.
