TCP : The Committee to Defend Press Independence in Egypt called Sunday for a re-investigation into the death of Dostor journalist Mayada Ashraf in March 2014, when she was covering riots in the Ain Shams District of Cairo.
“We are sorry that the journalist’s situation reached that far without any intervention from the authority. Like Ashraf, most of them don’t take their rights whether alive or dead,” the committee stated.

Ashraf was one among those “who paid their lives for the truth,” the committee wrote on its Facebook page.
Four persons allegedly affiliated to Muslim Brotherhood were accused of killing Ashraf. The main suspect, however, was killed during a firefight with security forces April 2014.
Committee head Besheer al-Adl demanded authorities “give journalists back their rights,” and called on Attorney General Hisham Barakat to reopen investigations into those journalists who died.
Journalists Against Torture, also demanded opening an investigation into Ashraf’s killing, as well as all cases of fallen journalists since 2011.
A delegation from the syndicate headed by the-newly elected head Yehia Qallash headed to Ashraf’s family in Menoufia governorate to offer condolences, Veto Gate reported.
Egypt was ranked as the third deadliest country for journalists by the CPJ in a December 2013 report, following Iraq and Syria. At least five journalists were killed, 30 assaulted, 11 news outlets raided, 44 journalists detained, and five remained in jail in late 2013, added the release.
According to a study by Al-Masry Studies and Information Center, which recorded assaults against journalists between January 1, 2011 and April 30, 2013, 309 Egyptian journalists were subjected to several attacks.
