Promotion paves way for ‘Premier’ Buswell

Troy Buswell’s return as the West Australian treasurer will pave the way for him to become the next premier if the Liberal National Party is re-elected next year, Opposition Leader Mark McGowan says.

Talking to reporters after a cabinet reshuffle on Thursday, the Labor leader claimed the WA Liberal Party was so devoid of talent that Mr Buswell was the only choice as premier should Colin Barnett step down next term as he has indicated.

“West Australians need to be very afraid that, if Mr Barnett is re-elected, Mr Buswell will become the premier of Western Australia,” Mr McGowan said.

“Mr Buswell becoming treasurer is a precursor to him becoming premier.

“I have no doubt about it – everyone in the Liberal Party says it.”

Mr McGowan was critical of the new treasurer, saying he had botched his housing portfolio leading to “record numbers of people on the housing wait list” and a halving in the number of building approvals.

“Now they’re going to make him the treasurer of Western Australia after that performance,” he said.

“In any other workplace, Troy Buswell would have been sacked.

“If he’d worked at McDonald’s, he would have been sacked – in the Liberal Party, he’s been promoted.””

Mr McGowan said the Liberal Party was in “turmoil and instability”, noting this was the sixth cabinet reshuffle since Mr Barnett came to power in 2008.

“I think it should scare the people of Western Australia that there is such turmoil and instability so close to an election,” he said.
