Qld cabinet to consider grim audit

The Queensland cabinet will on Monday consider the Costello audit of the state’s financial position, and the prospect of selling state-owned assets if it wins a second term in government.

Treasurer Tim Nicholls on Friday described the interim audit report by Howard government treasurer Peter Costello as a “menu” of options to remedy the economy in the September budget.

He said all recommendations – except a $100 landowners levy – were up for consideration, however not all cabinet members had seen them.

Mr Nicholls assured Queenslanders that assets would not be sold off without a mandate.

The opposition says the audit made predictable findings, which have enabled the Newman government to break its election promises by cutting frontline services and jobs, and lifting taxes, fees and charges.

It argues the sell-off of government business units such as QFleet, GoPrint, and IT services group CITEC would jeopardise more than 5,100 jobs.
