The Queensland government has written to its federal counterpart asking it to spend $40 million to help flood-proof parts of the state.
Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney said Queensland would commit $40 million over the next four years to build flood levees, basins and canals and he wanted the federal government to go dollar for dollar and local government to put in $20 million to create a $100 million Floodplain Security Scheme (FSS).
“Up-front investment can provide long-term savings to all levels of government and the community and provide increased confidence to the insurance sector,” Mr Seeney said.
