Queen heads to flower show

THE Queen and Prince Philip will tour Canberra’s famous flower show on the first full day of their tour Down Under.

The royals arrived in the nation’s capital yesterday to a ceremonial welcome attended by hundreds of local school children and VIPs, including Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Governor-General Quentin Bryce.

Her Majesty will formally receive Ms Bryce at Government House today, even though technically they’re both living there during the Canberra legs of the royal tour.

Joined by Prince Philip, they’ll then take a barge around Lake Burley Griffin and end up at Commonwealth Park, where the Floriade flower show just wrapt up its 24th season.

But the royal entourage will receive a private tour of the festival and its flower displays, which have been getting a special spruce-up in honour of the occasion.

Crowds in their thousands are expected to line the shores of the lake from early in the morning to catch a glimpse of the royal couple, who are visiting Australia for the first time since 2006 – and for what some say, could be their last.

Canberra student Hamish Allan, 11, was part of the welcoming committee at the airport on Wednesday and said it was great fun to see the Queen.

.”It’s been really exciting because it’s probably the last time she’ll be coming to Australia, so I wouldn’t have been able to see her again,” he said.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will stay in Canberra for a big part of the 10-day trip, although they’ll enjoy one-day jaunts to Brisbane and Melbourne, as well as to Perth for CHOGM for the final four days.

ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher, who’ll join the royal party on their tour of Floriade, said it was an honour for the royal couple to spend so much of their time in the nation’s capital.

“I visited the park yesterday and the Floriade team and the volunteers have clearly pulled out all stops to present a magnificent venue for our special visitors – I’m sure they will be very impressed,” she said.
