Singing in the rain

‘‘Just a gentle word for Her Highness, Mary,’’ Ms Phillips began.

‘‘She has given all the young women of this land a second breath that maybe out there is this amazing Prince Charming and he’s waiting for her.”

The royal couple laughed and Princess Mary reached over and grabbed her husband’s hand.

Princess Mary was seated next to Trade Minister Craig Emerson and Environment Minister Tony Burke.

Prince Frederik was engaged in a long and animated conversation with Professor Tim Flannery, possibly on the green issues that have brought the royal couple to Australia. He had Prime Minister Julia Gillard on his other side.

World-famous chef and long-time promoter of Tasmanian produce, Tetsuya Wakuda , was among the guests, but this time he was not in the kitchen, instead enjoying the food.

About 600 guests were dining on barramundi and spring double lamb cutlet and sipping on Tasmanian wines Stefano Lubiana sauvignon blanc and Frogmore Creek pinot noir.

The music of Princess Mary’s fellow Tasmanian, Peter Sculthorpe, was also played in the Great Hall.

The Danish and Australian royal anthems were performed as the official party stood before their respective country’s flags.

The table centrepieces featured white roses and gum leaves.

Princess Mary was in a printed black dress, unchanged from her arrival in Canberra.

The couple had met earlier with Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

Greeted with flowers

Earlier, Princess Mary was greeted with flowers and toy stuffed animals as she arrived for her one-day visit to Canberra.

Princess Mary and her husband Crown Prince Frederik touched down about 10.15am at Fairbairn airport this morning.

It begins the third visit of a foreign dignitary to Canberra in recent weeks, following on from United States President Barack Obama last week and the Queen late last month.

The royal couple was welcomed to the nation’s capital by the Danish ambassador’s children, Lukas, 18, and Sarah Shrine, 15.

They presented the royal couple with native flowers and some toy stuffed animals for their twin children – 10-month-old Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.
