Slipper coy over staffer 'incident'

Federal speaker Peter Slipper has pleaded ignorance after one of his staffers was accused of throwing a journalist’s phone into bushes.

The Sunshine Coast Daily has claimed reporter Owen Jacques’s iPhone was thrown by one of Mr Slipper’s policy advisers after he questioned the MP about his expenses during a press conference on Friday.

Mr Slipper, the member for the Sunshine Coast seat of Fisher, walked away without answering the question and a staffer grabbed the phone while it was still filming and threw it into ‘knee-deep scrub’, the paper said.

The speaker issued a statement saying he did not see the phone being thrown.

‘At today’s media conference, I was there to announce the exciting opportunity for the Sunshine Coast with Sunshine Coast TAFE selected to submit an application for the Educational Investment Fund for a world-class training and vocational education centre,’ he said.

‘I answered questions from the media for 30 minutes and as I had another appointment, my media adviser had to end the interview.

‘As you will see from the video attached, I then simply walked away. I did not see the alleged incident and would not condone it.’

Mr Slipper did not say whether any disciplinary action would be taken against the staffer.
