COMMUNICATIONS Minister Stephen Conroy has been forced to issue a grovelling apology for swearing during a live TV broadcast inside children’s viewing hours.

The Victorian Senator, who is in charge of broadcast standards, was slammed for using the f-word at the National Press Club.

When answering a question about investment risk Senator Conroy said: “If a tax goes down, that’s f***ing fantastic.”

He quickly corrected himself and said: “Excuse me, that is fantastic.”The address was shown on the ABC, before the G-rated Meerkat Manor, a popular show for children.

Australian Family Association spokeswoman Terri Kelleher said it was “simply unacceptable”, a poor example and “de-sensitises” young people to bad language.

Senator Conroy used the Press Club address to promote the National Broadband Network and slam his Opposition counterpart Malcolm Turnbull’s “conflicting” Coalition policy positions.

Mr Turnbull said the “vulgar” Senator had his facts wrong.

The Minister issued a statement apologising for his language. “It was completely accidental and I sincerely regret doing so. I apologise for any offence I may have caused,” he said.

Senator Conroy was not the first MP to swear on air.

Former Foreign Minister Gareth Evans once dropped the f-word in the Senate.
