South Sudan ethnic clashes kill 200

Hundreds more are missing as a result of the attacks in the state of Jonglei, which has been said to be reprisals for a wave of cattle raids and ethnic clashes.

“The people killed are around 223, 150 are injured,” Jonglei state governor Kuol Manyang said, adding that some 300 women and children are thought to have been abducted.

Thousands of cattle have also reportedly been stolen when the ethnic Lou Nuer living in neighboring Upper Nile state were attacked by people from Jonglei’s Murle area.

A historic peace agreement between Sudan and South Sudan signed in 2005 paved the way for an independence referendum in January 2011, in which southerners voted almost unanimously to secede.

South Sudan became independent on July 9, 2011 after decades of conflict with Sudan, which claimed the lives of thousands of people.

The oil-rich nation is one of the least developed countries in the world, where one in every seven child dies before the age of five.
