Spain disregards UK’s ‘scaremongering’

The Spanish Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, has confirmed that his country will vote for an independent Scotland to become a member of the European Union.

Westminster has raised concerns over the possibility that Spain would veto an independent Scotland’s EU membership in a bid to spread skepticism about the virtues of the country’s ending the 300-year old union with the UK.

Nevertheless, Spain’s Foreign Minister categorically ruled out any such possibility as he said that the Spanish government had “nothing to say” on the issue.

“If the two parts of the United Kingdom are in agreement that it is in accord with their constitutional arrangement, written or unwritten, Spain would have nothing to say. We would simply maintain that it does not affect us,” said Garcia-Margallo.

The SNP hailed Garcia-Margallo’s comments and said they were a setback to the “ridiculous scaremongering campaign” launched by the British government to subvert the SNP’s efforts to turn Scotland into an independent country.

“These comments are welcome and totally undermine the increasingly ridiculous scaremongering campaign by the Tories and the other anti-independence parties,” said SNP MSP Aileen McLeod, a member of the Scottish Parliament’s European and External Relations Committee.

Spain’s tacit support for an independent Scotland comes as Britain’s refusal to take part in negotiations with Spain over the sovereignty of Gibraltar has cast a cloud over the two countries’ relations.
